The Jackson County Genealogical Society has awarded scholarships to five local high school seniors. Each is valued at $750. Recipients were determined on the basis of essays they wrote on family or local history and interviews with the JCGS Scholarship Committee. Receiving scholarships are Smoky Mountain High seniors Addie Beck, Taylor Douthit, Andrea Floyd, Tanner Norman and Madalyn Smith. Beck, Floyd and Smith received Scott Foundation Scholarships; Norman earned the inaugural William Loranzo Crawford Scholarship; and Douthit captured the Robert Larry Crawford Scholarship.                                                                                                                                                                                   - Posted: 6/24/18

A couple of weeks before Memorial Day, the JCGS received a one-of-a-kind donation – a book that endeavors to provide information on all those from Jackson County who served in the armed forces during World War II. Compiled by Jackie Matthews Allums of Stockbridge, Georgia, the book is the only copy of research that’s taken her more than 10 years to complete. Titled “Jackson County North Carolina World War II Heroes,” the book is Jackie’s attempt to track everyone from this county who served. In addition, she compiled a second book that contains photocopies of the draft registration cards local young men filled out during the WWII years. Born in Jackson County’s Canada community, Jackie lived there until her family moved to Georgia when she was around 10.                                                                                      - Posted: 6/24/18

The Society has established a new scholarship to honor founding member and senior genealogist Bill Crawford. Contributions to the William Loranzo Crawford Scholarship Fund are welcome and may be made by sending checks to the JCGS, P.O. Box 480, Sylva, NC 28779 and putting “WLC Scholarship” in the check’s memo line. This makes five JCGS scholarships available to area high school seniors this spring. Three are through the generosity of the Jim and Jean Scott Foundation, one honors longtime Society editor Larry Crawford and one honors Bill Crawford.                                    - Posted: 2/18/18
